Types of Massage:

There are over 150 variations of massage, bodywork, and somatic therapy techniques. Massage therapists may utilize multiple techniques. The following is a brief description of just a few:

Swedish - This is a traditional massage comprised of elongating strokes togeather with kneading fractioning techniques working towards the ultimate goal of muscle relaxation. Individuals, free of specific physical problems, who want to unwind, usually opt for this technique.

Deep Tissue - The manipulation of deep connective tissue to break up and rid muscles of scar tissue that can result after surgery or injury.

Trigger Point Therapy - Sustained finger pressure to specific areas that contain trigger points. Trigger points are micro-traumas within muscles that are highly sensitive to touch but then release when appropriate pressure is applied.

Shiatsu/Acupressure - An Eastern originated massage method based on the philosophy of "energy meridians" and maintaining healthy and consistent energy flow through the body.

Myofascial release - This technique is used to coax muscles in spasm to relax, and break adhesions in the fascia. Myofascial release is also used to evaluate and treat restrictions in the body's contractile connective tissues (muscles) and non-contractile supportive connective tissues (fascia) by the application of gentle traction, positioning and pressures.

Neuromuscular therapy - The use of advanced techniques in pressure therapy to break the stress-tension-pain cycle. The aim is to relax muscle so that circulation can increase and the body will return to normal neuromuscular integrity and balance. The St. John Method is a type of NMT.
